The vision of establishing a state-of-the-art hospital was always in my mind throughout my stint as a teacher in Guwahati Medical College. During those days, although there was no dearth of qualified doctors in this region, the healthcare providers were chronically low as compared to the rest of India. This concern eventually led to the establishment of down town hospital on 15th February 1989. This fledgling hospital, at that time, provided a much-needed medical facility that catered to the need of the people of the North-East Indian states, who would have otherwise visited other parts of India in search of better medical facilities. Moreover, the hospital also attracted highly qualified practitioners and 27 teachers from abroad and Guwahati Medical College who wanted to work in a private sector and serve the people of the region.

For more than three decades now, down town hospital has been serving the people from all walks of life. From a mere 40 bedded hospital, with the support of 15 doctors and 32 employees, down town hospital has grown to a 300 bedded hospital with 100 doctors as the first multi speciality tertiary care corporate hospital with super specialty services providing medical care not only to the people of North East but also to the neighbouring countries.

It is the first hospital in North East India to be awarded the prestigious certificate by National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare providers (NABH) in 2013 for it's emphasis on Patient Safety & Quality of Care. In addition, the hospital is certified by ISO 9001:2015 and National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratories (NABL).

Our hospital is also recognized for Post Graduate training in General Medicine, Family Medicine, ENT, General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery & Super Speciality in Cardiology by National Board of Examination (DNB), New Delhi. Presently, 30 DNB students from all over India are undergoing training in the Institute.

Besides, it provides 2 years training in Diabetology under RSSDI (under Jaipur National University). At present, 5 students are undergoing the training.
